Since the very first days on mankind on Earth, people have recognized the medicinal power of plants to improve and maintain health. Plant-based healing, phytotherapy, is the world’s most ancient form of medicine. It is based on the essential relationship between man and plants.

In the ancient world, people had to fend for themselves – food, clothing, tools and health. They grew, knew and had an appreciation for the plants they needed. It is therefore not surprising that right from the outset people looked to the plant kingdom for cures and relief. There was a constant need to cope with pain, injuries, diseases and ailments related to aging. They needed to treat pain and disease and look for tools to improve the harsh conditions of life.

The medicinal properties of plants were learned through trial and error, and the knowledge accrued was handed down through the generations as a very valuable inheritance. This knowledge developed independently in the different countries around the world, yet it is amazing to see how similar it is.
Despite the fact that communications between countries were less efficient and slower than today, and despite the difference in the plant life in the various regions, cultures located thousands of kilometers from each other found identical plants or different plants with similar physiological effects to treat the same diseases. Sources describing hundreds of plants and thousands of preparations for treating disease have been found in all of the ancient lands. A major breakthrough in the study of medicinal plants and their effects came in the 18th century, with the switch from the traditional approach to medicines made of several plants, to the trend towards researching a single plant to isolate its active ingredients.

With the development of organic chemistry at the beginning of the 19th century, the plant-based medicine industry came into being. Today, the World Health Organization estimates that at least 80% of the world population uses medical treatments based on natural ingredients, and approximately 40% of medicines in the western world are based on natural ingredients. Plant-based medicine, which was the world’s oldest form of medicine, is becoming an area of innovative research. Beyond the panoply of shapes and enchanting colors, the plant world is an inexhaustible treasure of new natural substances and chemical ingredients with tremendous potential as a source of new medicines and financially beneficial raw materials.

Licorice - licorice is a perennial plant that reaches 80 cm – 100 cm in height. It grows in wet hothouses in Israel’s coastal plane, mountainous regions, inland valleys and the Golan Heights. It prefers flooded land or places where the ground water is high. Its stalks are straight and numerous, and it is in bloom from May through October. To this day, Arabs in Israel make sus, a drink named after the plant, and it is sold in the markets of the large cities in Judea and Samaria.
The essence of the root, known popularly as licorice, is used as an aromatic addition to tobacco, cigarettes, chewing gum and candy, and also to improve the taste and smell of medicines. The essence has an important place in both folk and modern medicine in the preparation of expectorants, to ease coughs and hoarseness and treat ulcers.
